Adult ADD – from Mona Lisa Schultz

Learn now to pay attention and feel like you’re sharp as a tack, or at least not, as they say, the dullest tool in the shed.

Woman with Satellites

In a world that drives us crazy with all that information that comes at us from everywhere, it’s so easy to feel like you’re losing your mind. It used to be that the world was so much simpler with less information to keep in mind and fewer balls to juggle in the air.

You remember when we got news on the TV or the radio. We only had four channels. Remember how you had a TV with the rabbit ears, or a hangar with aluminum foil. You’d get four channels, CBS, ABC, NBC, and if you were lucky and you put the aluminum foil a certain way, you’d get PBS. And then, when you went out to your car, you’d get AM and you’d get FM. If you had a phone, you got one call at a time, and if someone tried to call you, and you were talking to someone else, they got a busy signal, and they’d just have to wait. There was no such thing as call forwarding or people with multiple lines. But today, the world is not so simple. There are so many more channels of information that bombard your brain at any time, it’s so, so overwhelming. It makes you feel that you’re driven, distractible, and have ADD.

There are literally thousands of channels and ways of getting information, either satellite radio or satellite TV. Then we have cable, iPods, cell phones, voice mail, we have so many different ways of getting information, that it’s no wonder that we are driven to distraction. However, most of us don’t have the typical ADD that people fling Ritalin at or Adderal at. You know, the type that’s distractible, inattentive, and impulsive – the kids who get the Ritalin thrown at them usually have problems paying attention to details. They can’t pay attention to the work for long periods of time. They don’t follow through with their homework. They’re disorganized. They don’t plan ahead. They lose things all over the place, and they’re hyperactive. They fidget in their chairs, they leave their seats, they’re always running around. They’re so driven. It’s easy to say, just throw Ritalin at that person. We’re going to learn how that particular type of brain may have problems paying attention in the classroom, learning in captivity, if you will, but that type of brain may be uniquely designed to be a satellite dish for intuition.

You my have trouble, in your forties, your fifties, or even later, paying attention in the world and you may feel that you have late onset ADD or early onset dementia, but that’s just not the case. There are four basic ways in which you can feel like you’re developing attention deficit disorder (ADD), and there are ways in which to solve those problems.

The first of four different ways of feeling that you’re losing your mind, you can’t pay attention and you can’t remember is if your hormones are a mess and your immune system is on the fritz. If you have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, environmental illness, chronic infections like sinus infections, allergies, if you have rheumatoid arthritis or some other kind of joint problem, or if you are in some type of treatment for cancer like chemotherapy, when your immune system or your hormones are on the fritz, you are not going to be able to pay attention, and you’re going to think that you have ADD and you’re going to want your doctor to give you Ritalin and that would be a mistake.

The second type of distractibility is when your emotions are a mess or you’re panicked and frenzied. If you have depression, if you have anxiety, panic, it’s hard to pay attention because all of your circuits are focused on other emotions, and there are many people who think they have attention deficit disorder and they feel somewhat better initially on Adderal or Ritalin, but after a month or so, their brain is a fuzzball again.

The third type of attention where you think you have ADD is when your attention is elsewhere, something else is bothering you inside. All your attention circuits are busy, so you’re not going to be able to pay attention to the outer world in class or at work and you’re going to make mistakes, and you’re going to think you have ADD, and you’re going to want medicine for it, and once again, medicine will be a mistake.

The fourth type of attention deficit is when you have satellite dish intuition, and that is where your attention problems are really a form of intuition. Your attention may be focused intuitively on others, people who are in pain, agony, or suffering, so much that it’s almost like your bi-locating. Your brain is with someone else and it’s not present at your desk at work or at home with your partner. In this particular situation, someone might say to you, “Hello! Base to Ruth? Come in Ruth!” You might feel like you’re a space cadet or a space shot, and they might want to medicate you, but in fact, your problem is not ADD, you have a problem with intuition.

So, what do you do if you have these four problems? This morning I did a reading on John, 29, he called me for a reading said, “What do I do? I’m making so many mistakes at work.” When I read him, I saw that he was working in an organization that was horrendous. There were people over him that were very impatient. I didn’t even think it was the right company for him. When I went to John’s body, I looked at his head, it felt all red and inflamed. I looked at his neck, thyroid, heart, breasts, lungs, every area of his body, and I saw that his bowels were in an uproar and his skin was all red. And in fact, John had hives. He said, “Why am I making all these mistakes? Why can’t I pay attention, and why do I have these hives?” I said, “John, your intuitive guidance is telling you through your distractibility and your rash that this is not the right work for you. You need to look for a better organization where you feel safe and secure.” Because John had so much inflammation in his system, his mast cells and his immune system were releasing cytokines, cortisol, and norepinephrine. They were literally frying his brain apparatus for attention and preventing him from paying attention.

The second type of attention deficit disorder can be seen in Tina, 43. Tina called me for a reading and wanted me to tell her what her health was letting her know what about her life was out of balance. I said, “Tina, you had huge trauma in your life growing up. There was drama. There was violence, and in fact you feel like the issue of home is terrifying for you.” When I got to her body, I saw that her brain and body were responding to the trauma from the past, reverberating. I saw that her brain felt like a fuzzball. Her mind was always going on panic and the fritz. I looked at her chest, and it felt like she had pressure in her chest, it was hard to take a deep breath, and in times she felt numbness in her hands and her toes. And in fact, Tina told me that she had post-traumatic stress disorder and panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, and she wanted to know if she had ADD as well. I said, “Tina, so many of your brain circuits are focused elsewhere due to the trauma that you had growing up (she told me that she was an orphan at age 12, both her mother and father were killed in an accident), that so much of her panic circuits were in the past, that not much attention could be focused on today, and so that medicating her for attention deficit disorder would be missing the boat completely, that she has to deal with the appropriate mode of treatment for her trauma, and then she would be able to pay attention to the present.

Whether your problem is with your horomones and immune system, emotions or you have satellite dish intuition where your intuition is going to loved ones or those around you who are in need, so you can’t pay attention to the present, because you’re paying attention to their lives as well, it is important to get in touch with how your distractibility is part of your intuitive guidance system. It is necessary to learn the earliest signs when your intuition and your attention is going somewhere else so that you can focus on the present. You will want to explore ways to prime and treat your immune system if that’s what’s causing you to be distractible, to prime your attention if your emotions are out of balance, and most importantly, to learn to recognize and use your intuitive guidance if that is causing you to be distractible so you can return your focus to the present.

Midlife Transition : 5 great books to read

1. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre was the first novel that really moved me and surprised me as a woman. I think this is true for a lot of female readers. Jane Eyre is told from the point of view of a 12-year-old girl in a dreadful situation. She’s an orphan who is adopted by a cruel bunch of people and sent to a horrible boarding school. So it’s about travail, but more importantly, it’s about coming through travail. Jane is a very brave, bold, upstanding girl who always seems able to defend herself, even in terrible situations.

What this book meant to me was that Continue reading “Midlife Transition : 5 great books to read”

Midlife Women – Dressing Your Truth

I hope I didn’t shock you but I am BURNING with this topic right now!

My heart aches, my mind is spinning with ideas and I had to talk to you! Men, if you are reading this please accept my apologies- or maybe…. not. Maybe you’ll see the sense in what I am about to say.

This comes from the bottom of my heart! I want to create 10.3 million GORGEOUS HOT beautiful women in 2010! I am sure my male subscribers are all for that!

I read an article today in a fashion magazine that reported that 10.2 million people had cosmetic or nonsurgical procedures performed in the United States in 2008.

Some of the top five procedures preformed were:

Botox injections
Breast augmentation
Rhinoplasty
Abdominoplasty

Or in plain everyday language, wrinkle shots, boob jobs, nose jobs, and tummy tucks! So I think it is safe to say that most of these 10.2 million people were women afraid of looking old before their time.

Ironically this report was not one of alarm, but more of a “join the party” invitation!

It used to be that only the Joan Rivers of the world, the rich and famous were using these procedures to secure eternal youth, but nowadays everyone in the neighborhood is doing it or at least thinking it is an option!

The biggest motive is the anti-aging craze that the baby boomer generation is conflicted with. Eternal youth has become a billion dollar industry.

Once you start though, where do you stop?

What if there was a safe natural way to take years off your appearance and pounds off your body, that did not involve invasive surgery, drugs, and MLM companies ? Would you be interested?

I would have loved to have had 5 minutes with those 10.2 million people to show them how naturally they could have achieved more successfully what their procedures only attempted to do unnaturally.

If this topic burns in your heart too- or you are one of those women who did have a Boob job and you still don’t feel totally gorgeous-

“Making Time for the Things You Love” Ali Brown

Keeping up with business and social engagements sometimes means sacrificing our personal hobbies and relaxation time. But making time for ourselves, even on a busy day, can and will help us feel better and function better. Although it’s admirable to spend time taking care of work, friends, family, and pets, it’s even more important to spend time taking care of ourselves.

Here’s how to carve out time for yourself and the things you love.

*Learn to say no. As women, we’re often guilted into taking on extra work or attending meetings or events that don’t interest us because we’re too nice to say no. However, you need to practice saying no so that you can clear some time to yourself and say yes to the things that you want to do. There’s no shame in skipping a committee meeting every now and then so you can get a massage. Or RSVPing no to a networking event if you really need a quiet evening of rest and relaxation.

*Don’t forget family time. Family time can be converted into relaxation and bonding time together simply by selecting an activity the whole family can enjoy. Relationships can get a new lease on life too, if both partners decide to pursue a hobby or chosen form of relaxation together.

*Incorporate your interests into your vacation. Don’t be afraid to take time off! You’ve earned it, plus it’s a chance to follow through on hobbies and interests that might not fit into your regular routine. It doesn’t matter if the vacation is with family or friends; it’s about selecting opportunities that work for everyone – say, diving for you, lying on the beach for Jane, and bar hopping for John.

*Identify what makes you happy. Over time, our lives change – we pursue different careers, get married, have kids. Often we lose sight of what used to make us glow. Spend time remembering those magical moments and then commit a few hours each week to rekindling them. Ensure that you have a specific project in mind, because that eases up on the time it takes to get the project going. Saying “I want to write” is too ambiguous. Saying “I want to write a memoir about traveling to Japan” will give you more direction and focus.

It doesn’t matter how much time you’re able to spend each time on your personal project. The important thing is that you commit to doing it regularly and frequently so that it becomes a habit. Realize that once you’ve found the things you love to do, whether that’s swing dancing, cooking Indian curries, or making pottery, you need to hold onto them and never give them up.

You may have to change your daily schedule or work and social commitments to fit in this extra time. But doing so will be beneficial in the long run, because the sense of accomplishment and fulfillment you get from pursuing your passions will make you a happier and more productive person.

Reinvent Yourself in Midlife

Do you like your life the way it is? Would you like to change some, or all of it? Well, here’s good news: You can be whatever you want to be. You can re-invent yourself. I know because I did!

You may have a whole lifetime to undo or re-invent, but if you are determined, and ready to put in the effort, anything is possible. You can have a new you!

Here are 7 steps to a new, improved, re-invented you!

1) Make two detailed lists comprising: (a) all the things you like about yourself and want to keep, (b) all the things you don’t like about yourself and want to change. Examine both lists and ask yourself why you like what you like, and why you want to change what you want to change. Write out your answers as two separate statements. Keep these statements where you can see, and read them everyday.

2) Work on your “Want-to-Keep” list everyday. Keep on doing what you’ve been doing, and you’ll keep on getting what you’ve been getting! Also, work on your “Want-to-Change” list everyday, but in a different way. Take each item on this second list and re-state it as a goal. Remember your goals must be Specific (clear and unambiguous), Measurable (a specific weight, time, sum of money etc), Attainable (within your stated time frame and resources), Realistic (in your eyes) and Tangible (something you can perceive with your senses, not “imagine” with your mind!)

3) From your “Want-to-Change” list, identify your 3 most important goals, the ones that will make the most impact on your life, and bring about the new you. Write out a day-by-day, step-by-step plan for attaining each of these goals.

4) Identify possible pitfalls or obstacles to your plan. Set up contingency plans to circumvent these hurdles. Do not stop at them. No one can stop you from reaching those goals but you.

5) Take action on your plan. Work those goals! Even a small step on your plan each day will move you closer to the new you! If you fall behind, or fall out altogether, just think of the lovely new life you stand to gain if you would just try. Imagine what it would look and feel like to be the new you. Know in your heart that it is possible, but it is also up to you. You owe it to yourself to get back up and on with the program. Only time, patience and action separate you from your goal.

6) Reward yourself for progress. Forgive yourself for slip-ups. Then move on. No time for Pity Parties!

7) Stay motivated. Think on your reasons for wanting to make the change. Visualize the outcome of your goals, vividly. Hang out with people who encourage you to keep at it. Stay away from negative people, at least till you “get there!” Read motivational books, employ a coach to help you stay on track. Enlist a supportive friend, to rejoice with you at each success, and encourage you at each challenge.

That’s it! Re-inventing yourself will never be easy. You are going against patterns that may have been established for years. It will take determination, effort and patience, but it is possible, and ultimately rewarding.

I went through a process of re-invention a few years ago. I went from an overweight, unhealthy, plain-dressed, unfulfilled, job-holder, to a slim, trim, healthy, trendy, self-employed, fulfilled entrepreneur. Instead of holding a job, I now do my life’s work. I am working my own goals, and getting the results I desire. I am still not all that I want to be. But I am closer to my goals than to my starting point. No one will ever be “picture-perfect” in this life. But “fulfilled and satisfied” is the name of the game for me! And I sure am glad I had the courage to try.

People and circumstances will oppose you, saying, “It isn’t possible”, or, “Why can’t you just be satisfied with what you’ve got?” (The answer to that is, “Because I’m no ordinary person!”) But if you think your dreams are worth the effort, and you are willing to do what it takes, you can have whatever you want.

Dreams still do come true. And you don’t require a fairy god-mother! Setting and working your goals is how it works in the real world. So be bold, take action and enjoy the new you!
