Spiritual Counselor reflects on Soul Purpose in Midlife

Today, I have decided to finally begin sharing the things that have been going through my mind lately.
I have no real certainty of these ideas yet – except that they keep wanting to be told. I’ve actually begun
a new book so I can explore them further. Thanks for reading this – and I’d LOVE to hear your comments as
well.

We have come to a greater understanding of the way the mind functions in recent years. We’ve even come
to understand things like the Law of Attraction, and those who take it seriously are definitely teaching that
it is far beyond just seeing what you want and creating it. It involves vibration – It involves beliefs that are
congruent with what you are asking – and it definitely involves focused action to achieve these desired outcomes.
I’m in complete agreement on this process. I see it and know it to be true, not only in my life, but in the lives
of the many people I have had the privilege of being a spiritual teacher and counselor for over the years.

What am I noticing – especially since I have begun truly focusing on the adult development stage that is known
as midlife – is that at some point in our spiritual development as well as our normal physical and mental development,
we truly begin to see that life is so much more than what it appears. For many of us, we have had glimpses of
that in our earlier years. But, midlife – and what some have called the midlife crisis, brings us face to face with
the deeper questions that ask what is my life REALLY about and what does it wish to become? We ask the question-
what is all this striving for? What am I attempting to attain and is it all worth it? In other words, “Is that all there is?”
At this point, many of us come to realize that perhaps our soul is seeking to be revealed – and not just according to
the standards society has set for our external lives. We discover a hunger for more. We often begin to have experiences
of everything we have known falling apart – whether through loss of a job, a loved one, a divorce, or children leaving the nest.
In other words, all the striving, all the learning to set goals, all the ways we have manifested in the past, suddenly come into question. I know it has for me.

Recently I had a conversation with a Minister friend about these very ideas. He said something startling but I believe in
line with this thinking I am attempting to put forth here. He said, we teach people to manifest – and they can learn that
somewhat easily. But, what we don’t teach them is that it all gets taken away… and then, what they are left with is the relationship they have created with the Divine. WHEW… So, is that the quest of our souls in midlife? Is what we are really seeking is an understanding – or should I better say, an experience of the Divine? And, if so, how do we go about it?
Certainly not through the traditional visualization, meditation, spiritual practice and manifestation techniques. At least not with those alone.

It is my surmising – and becoming a more firm belief each day, that what we are seeking is an experience of the Divine that can only come through GRACE. There, I said it… Now, what?

More to follow – and I sincerely hope you’ll join the conversation here…

Thanks
Dr. Toni – reclaiming the title of Rev. as well — without all the trappings that usually go with titles…
(more on that later as well….)
